Event Notes

× Welcome to Hybrid By Design.

This is a festival that celebrates process and experimentation.

We invite you to do the same.

Each block of time, whether it be an afternoon or an evening, has been curated with a series of offerings for you to experience.

The artist will share her practice with the live audience, and screen a short film reflecting a current work in development, Tattoo x Women. This will be followed by a Q & A opportunity with the artist who will be engaging with the audience with support from a BSL Interpreter. ASL interpretation will be offered.

What's On Today:

The B-Side Series: Process Sharing with Chisato Minamimura

Start Time: 1:00pm

Running May 9-15, 2022, Hybrid by Design features seven works by artists from The Theatre Centre’s Residency program and a selection of international work curated by Battersea Arts Centre in London, U.K. As part of Canada Council’s Digital Now program, the work featured will bridge live performance and digital creation in experimental, genre-defying ways ensuring audiences in-person and at home can experience the show of a lifetime.

Tattoo X Women is a new sensorial digital performance project which celebrates multinational perspectives, personal histories & authentic accounts of tattoo cultures, exploring the complex relationships between women and the visual mark-making artform of tattoos. Inspired by the Wellcome Collection's Medicine Man exhibition, Tattoo X Women incorporates kinetic projection, animation, vibrotactile technology and a unique blend of Chisato's movement style to explore tattoos and their meanings in new ways. This sharing will be an opportunity to show some of the outcomes and findings from an initial artistic development phase, welcoming feedback and questions. This sharing will include an introductory artist talk, a short film excerpt of the performance process so far, and a chance for audience questions.

The B-side Series offers artist-hosted workshops, conversations and activations curated by Sue Balint. Engage directly with artists and explore themes relating to their work, practice, and the future of live arts.
