Event Notes

× Welcome to Hybrid By Design.

This is a festival that celebrates process and experimentation.

We invite you to do the same.

Each block of time, whether it be an afternoon or an evening, has been curated with a series of offerings for you to experience.

An in-person and zoom conversation streamed into the Franco Boni Theatre with Thomas McKechnie and audience members about his totally analog play by mail; 12 Letters from Your Lover, Lost at Sea. Some blocks are open to audiences coming and going, while others we recommend you attend in full. We’ll always do our best to let latecomers in at the earliest appropriate moment based on when you arrive.

What's On Tonight:

100% Analog: A Long Table Around 12 Letters from Your Lover, Lost at Sea

The B-Side Series: On Devising, Rehearsing and Performing: Creating an ethic of care & disruption

Start Time: 1:00pm

Running May 9-15, 2022, Hybrid by Design features seven works by artists from The Theatre Centre’s Residency program and a selection of international work curated by Battersea Arts Centre in London, U.K. As part of Canada Council’s Digital Now program, the work featured will bridge live performance and digital creation in experimental, genre-defying ways ensuring audiences in-person and at home can experience the show of a lifetime.

100% Analog: A Long Table Around 12 Letters from Your Lover, Lost at Sea

12 Letters from Your Lover, Lost at Sea was a theatre-by-mail experience in which audience members received 12 letters and postcards written by a mysterious hitchhiker named Z. It’s a story of ghosts, Nazis, love and the Torrington Gopher Museum. We invite individuals who experienced the play, or those curious about it, to join together in a long table conversation about the work, about doing theatre during COVID, and about challenging definitions of what constitutes a play.

12 Letters was Written by Hannah Kaya and Thomas McKechnie
and Produced by zietpunktheatre
in association with Why Not Theatre and The Theatre Centre

B-side Series: On Devising, Rehearsing and Performing: Creating an ethic of care & disruption (Programmed in partnership with Battersea Arts Centre)

In this presentation Liselle Terret will be asking: How can we disrupt the mainstream-conventional-rehearsal / devising process through a feminist, Crip and queer framework in order to create accessible and inclusive performance approaches that ultimately seduce and implicate audiences in active re-considerations of their own lives? How can theatre-making processes be deployed to enable, include, champion and celebrate the creativity of neuro-diverse and learning-disabled artists?

The B-side Series offers artist-hosted workshops, conversations and activations curated by Sue Balint. Engage directly with artists and explore themes relating to their work, practice, and the future of live arts.
